Overview

The Kedarnath Temple is a revered Hindu shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva and houses idols of several deities including Parvati, Lord Krishna, the five Pandavas and their wife Draupadi, Nandi, Veerabhadra, and other gods. The temple’s mantras are chanted in Kannada, highlighting its rich cultural heritage. Architecturally, the Kedarnath Temple is impressive, standing 85 feet tall, 187 feet long, and 80 feet wide, with walls 12 feet thick made from robust stone. Local belief holds that the Shiva idol here has decayed over time, and its head is said to reside in the Doleshwar Mahadev Temple in Bhaktapur, Nepal. Despite its vulnerabilities, some scholars assert that the temple is safeguarded by its deity from any calamity. Additionally, the Bhairon Nath Temple, located nearby, is considered a protector of Kedarnath. It is essential to visit Bhairon Nath during the temple’s opening and closing ceremonies, as he is believed to ward off demons and protect the shrine during its closure.

Badrinath Temple, situated at 3,133 meters above sea level, is part of both the Char Dhams of India and the Chota Char Dhams of Uttarakhand. It is located near the last Indian village of Mana and shares a border with China. According to legend, while traveling with Mother Parvati, Lord Shiva encountered a crying child in Badrinath. Lord Vishnu, seeking to establish a sacred place, requested Lord Shiva and Parvati to offer refuge in this holy area. Badrinath’s main deities include Kubera, Garuda, Badrivishal, Uddhava, Narada, Narayan, and Nar, with Lord Ram also worshipping Lord Vishnu here.

The Tungnath Temple, renowned for its architecture akin to Kedarnath and Madmaheshwar temples, is believed to be over 1,000 years old. The trek to Tungnath is short and relatively easy, offering stunning views of the Panchchuli, Nanda Devi, Nilkanth, and Kedarnath peaks. Along the trek, you’ll encounter vibrant rhododendrons, picturesque waterfalls, lush greenery, and snow-covered mountains. Reaching Deorital reveals a shimmering, though icy, lake, and from the Tungnath summit, you can enjoy breathtaking vistas of Nanda Devi, Trishul, Nandaghunti, Dronagiri, Chaukhamba, and Kedarnath.
