The Kedarnath Temple is a revered shrine that houses idols of various gods and goddesses, including Lord Shiva, Parvati, Lord Krishna, the five Pandavas, their wife Draupadi, Nandi, Veerabhadra, and more. This ancient temple stands 85 feet tall, 187 feet long, and 80 feet wide, with walls 12 feet thick, built from strong, enduring stones. In the Kedarnath Temple, mantras are chanted in Kannada, adding to the unique spiritual atmosphere. There is a belief that the idol of Shiva in Kedarnath has decayed over time, and its head is now enshrined at the Doleshwar Mahadev Temple in Bhaktapur, Nepal. The Bhairo Nath Temple, located nearby, is considered the protector of Kedarnath. Visiting this temple during the opening and closing ceremonies of Kedarnath is believed to be crucial, as Bhaironathji is thought to ward off demons and safeguard the shrine when it is closed.
Badrinath Temple, another significant site, is unique as it is part of both the Char Dhams of India and the Chota Char Dhams of Uttarakhand. Located at an elevation of 3,133 meters (10,279 feet) above sea level, Badrinath is close to the last Indian village of Mana and shares a border with China. According to local legend, while traveling through the Himalayas, Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati encountered a crying child on the Badrinath Marg. In response, Lord Vishnu requested Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati to include him in their sacred area, leading to the establishment of Badrinath. The temple’s Garvagriha venerates deities in a specific order: Kubera, Garuda, Badrivishal, Uddhava, Narada, Narayan, and Nar. Additionally, it is said that Lord Ram visited Badrinath (Badrikashram) to worship Lord Narayan (Vishnu), further enhancing the temple’s spiritual significance.
