After breakfast you set off on the half-day city tour. You stop at Jumeirah Beach, where the sand is pale and the water is warm, and you get your photographs of the Burj Al Arab standing out in the sea like a sail. The drive continues past the Palm Jumeirah and the Atlantis hotel. In the evening comes the part everybody waits for — the lift to the 124th and 125th floors of the Burj Khalifa. It rises so fast your ears pop, and then the doors open and the whole city is spread out below you, roads glowing in straight orange lines all the way to the desert.

Why These Places Matter

Burj Khalifa — at 828 metres it has been the tallest building in the world since it opened in 2010, and nothing has come close since. The design was drawn from the hymenocallis, a desert flower with three spreading petals.

Palm Jumeirah — an island built out of dredged sand and rock, finished in 2007. It added roughly 56 km of new beachfront to a city that had run out of coast.

The morning is quiet — a short drive to Zabeel Park and up the Dubai Frame, where a glass floor lets you look straight down at your own shoes with the park far below. Look one way and you see the low, sand-coloured buildings of old Dubai. Turn around and it is all towers. The afternoon changes completely. A 4x4 collects you and drives out to the red dunes, where the driver lets air out of the tyres and takes the car up and down the slopes. After that there is a camel ride, henna if you want it, a barbecue dinner under lights, and dancing on a small stage while the sand cools around you.

Why These Places Matter

Dubai Frame — built deliberately so that old Dubai sits inside the frame on one side and new Dubai on the other. It is the only place in the city where you can see both halves at once from one spot.

The red dunes — their colour comes from iron oxide in sand blown in from the Empty Quarter. Bedouin families crossed this exact stretch with camel caravans within living memory.

• The Dubai Frame is 150 m tall and 93 m wide, and opened to visitors in 2018.
• Drivers drop tyre pressure to around half the road setting so the tyres flatten and float over soft sand.

• Skip a heavy lunch before the dune drive. It is genuinely bumpy and motion sickness is common.
• Wear closed shoes you do not mind filling with sand, and carry a light shawl for after dark.
• Tell the driver in advance if anyone is pregnant, elderly, or has a back or heart condition — they will take a gentler route.

Today is one thing only, and that is the point. Aquaventure sits on the outer crescent of the Palm and takes a whole day to get through. There are more than thirty slides, a lazy river that carries you around the park for as long as you like, and a private beach at the edge if you want to stop. The one everybody talks about is the Leap of Faith, a near-vertical drop that sends you through a clear tube running along the bottom of a lagoon full of sharks and rays. It lasts about three seconds and you will talk about it for the rest of the trip.

Aquaventure — one of the largest waterparks in the world, and the reason many families choose Dubai over other beach holidays. Because it sits on the Palm, the whole park stands on land that did not exist twenty-five years ago.

• The lagoon under the Leap of Faith holds sharks and rays kept in a managed marine habitat.

• Reach the gates when the park opens. Queues for the big slides double by midday.

Three very different stops today. You start at the Dolphinarium in Creek Park for the dolphin and seal show, which is short, funny and pitched at children. Then AYA Universe, a set of dark rooms where light, sound and mirrors build spaces that feel like other planets — you walk through slowly and take a lot of photographs. The last stop is the Museum of the Future, the silver ring-shaped building covered in Arabic writing that you will have seen from the road. Inside, each floor is arranged as a scene from the year 2071.

Why These Places Matter

Museum of the Future — the calligraphy covering the outside is not decoration but three quotations from Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, cut through the steel so they light up at night. The building has no internal pillars, which is why the galleries feel so open.

Creek Park — sits along Dubai Creek, the saltwater inlet where the city actually began as a fishing and trading settlement.

• The Museum of the Future opened in February 2022 and stands 77 m tall.
• Dubai Creek was dredged in the 1960s so larger cargo ships could dock — a decision that shifted the city's fortunes before oil money arrived.

An early start and about ninety minutes on the highway to Abu Dhabi. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque comes first, and it is white to the point of being hard to look at in the sun. The main prayer hall holds the largest hand-knotted carpet in the world, and the courtyard floor is inlaid with flowers in coloured stone. After that you cross to Yas Island for Ferrari World, where the headline ride is Formula Rossa. It fires you from a standstill to 240 km per hour in under five seconds, which is why they hand out safety goggles first.

Why These Places Matter

Breakfast at the hotel, then check out and a private transfer to the airport. If your flight is late in the day, ask reception about leaving your bags — most hotels here hold them at no charge, which gives you a few free hours. The Gold Souk in Deira and the spice lanes beside it are the sensible last stop: prices are set by weight at the daily rate, bargaining is expected on the making charge, and you can walk out with something worth carrying home.
