After breakfast you take the half-day city tour. It starts at Merlion Park for the photograph everybody takes, with Marina Bay Sands filling the background. From there it is Chinatown — go for the temples and the food street rather than the souvenir stalls — and across the Helix Bridge, built as a double DNA strand. The afternoon is free; most people use it for Gardens by the Bay or Orchard Road.

Why These Places Matter

The Merlion — designed in 1964 as a tourism symbol. The lion head refers to the city's old name Singapura, "lion city", and the fish body to its origins as a fishing village.

Chinatown — home to the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Sri Mariamman, Singapore's oldest Hindu temple, standing a few streets apart. That mix is the point.

A full Sentosa day, all tickets included. You start with the cable car from Mount Faber, which gives you the harbour from above and is much better than driving across. On the island there is Madame Tussauds with a digital photo, then the Skyline Luge — two luge runs and two Skyrides, which is the part children remember. The day finishes with Wings of Time, the outdoor light and fireworks show on the beach.

Why These Places Matter

Sentosa — the name means "peace and tranquillity" in Malay. It was a British military base and later a prisoner-of-war camp before being redeveloped as a resort island in the 1970s.

Wings of Time — performed over open water with the sea as the screen, and one of the few permanent shows in the world staged this way.

• Sentosa sits about 500 m off the main island and is reached by cable car, road, monorail or a boardwalk.
• The Skyline Luge began in New Zealand and Sentosa's is among the busiest tracks anywhere.

• Wings of Time is a fixed-date ticket, so this evening cannot be moved.
• Closed shoes are required for the luge — no sandals or flip-flops.
• Book the cable car for the morning; the queue builds sharply after midday.

The whole day at Universal Studios, with admission included. Seven zones — Hollywood, Sci-Fi City, New York, Ancient Egypt, Lost World, Madagascar and Far Far Away — and around twenty-eight rides and shows between them. Be realistic: this is a long day standing in queues in high humidity. Get there for opening, do the big coasters first while the lines are short, and plan a long indoor lunch when the heat peaks.

Universal Studios Singapore — opened in 2010 and still the only Universal park in Southeast Asia. Several rides here exist nowhere else in the world.

Far Far Away — built as the world's first Shrek-themed zone, with a castle that doubles as the park's most recognisable landmark.

• Battlestar Galactica was the world's tallest pair of duelling roller coasters when it opened.
• The park sits inside Resorts World Sentosa, one of the most expensive developments ever built in Singapore.

• Lockers are compulsory for the bigger rides and are paid separately.
• Refill water bottles at the free stations — buying drinks inside is expensive.

Breakfast, check out, and a private transfer back to Changi for the flight to Langkawi. That flight is not part of the package. You are met at Langkawi airport and taken to the hotel. Once settled, the SkyCab cable car takes you up Gunung Mat Cinchang to the Sky Bridge, a curved walkway suspended over rainforest, with the 3D Art museum and the 6D Cinemotion included on the same ticket.

The island day. Underwater World Langkawi is the main stop — Malaysia's largest aquarium, with a fifteen-metre walk-through tunnel and something over four thousand species, and it holds children's attention for a couple of hours. You can add the Atma Alam Batik Art Village if you want to see the wax-and-dye process properly. Otherwise the afternoon is beach time, which after four days in Singapore is rather the point.

• Underwater World Langkawi — a large aquarium with a walk-through tunnel
• Atma Alam Batik Art Village — optional, with live batik demonstrations
• Cenang Beach — the main stretch of sand, good for sunset

Why These Places Matter

Underwater World — opened in 1995 and one of the largest marine aquariums in the region, including a rockhopper penguin colony in a chilled enclosure.

Batik — a wax-resist dyeing technique recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage. Watching it done makes the price of a good piece make sense.

• Langkawi's full name, Langkawi Permata Kedah, means "the jewel of Kedah".
• The island was granted duty-free status in 1987 to encourage tourism, and it worked.

• Sunset at Cenang is the local event of the day; arrive by about 6.30 pm.
• Alcohol is unusually cheap here because of duty-free status, but drink respectfully — Kedah is conservative.

Check out and fly across to Kuala Lumpur — again, that flight sits outside the package price. You are transferred to the hotel and check in. In the afternoon the shared city tour covers the Petronas Towers from the park below, which is where the photograph actually works, along with the King's Palace gates, Merdeka Square and the National Monument.

Petronas Twin Towers — the tallest buildings in the world from 1998 to 2004, and still the tallest twin towers anywhere. The floor plan is based on an Islamic geometric pattern.

Merdeka Square — the Union Jack was lowered here at midnight on 31 August 1957 and the Malayan flag raised. The flagpole is one of the tallest in the world.

• Kuala Lumpur means "muddy confluence" — it grew where two rivers meet.
• The Petronas skybridge on the 41st and 42nd floors is not fixed to either tower, so it can slide as the buildings sway.

A day trip into the hills. The Awana SkyWay cable car carries you up to Genting and the temperature drops noticeably — take a light jacket, because most people do not and regret it. At the top there is the indoor theme park, the shopping and the casino, which is optional. On the way back down you stop at Batu Caves: 272 steps in painted rainbow colours up to a limestone cave temple, with the gold Murugan statue at the base.

Why These Places Matter

Batu Caves — a 400-million-year-old limestone formation and the most important Hindu shrine outside India dedicated to Lord Murugan. The gold statue at the base stands 42.7 m and is the tallest of Murugan anywhere.

Thaipusam at Batu Caves — draws well over a million devotees each year, one of the largest Hindu gatherings outside India.

Genting — developed from the 1960s on land a Malaysian businessman bought after noticing how cool the hilltop was compared with the plains.

• Genting sits at about 1,800 m, roughly 10°C cooler than Kuala Lumpur.
• The Batu Caves steps were repainted in bright colours in 2018 and the site became instantly recognisable worldwide.

Why This Matters

Timing the transfer — KLIA sits well outside Kuala Lumpur and the morning traffic on the highway is unpredictable. Travellers who allow only an hour door to door are the ones who end up running.

• KLIA opened in 1998 and was designed by the Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa around a "forest in the airport" idea.
• There is a rainforest section growing inside the satellite terminal.

Helpful Info

• Allow at least three hours before an international flight, plus the drive.
• Spend leftover ringgit before you leave — it is not easy to exchange in India.
