A Parvati Valley classic, and the one with the famous finish – a long snow slide down the far side of the pass instead of a walk. This Sar Pass trek climbs from Kasol through Grahan village and out above the tree line to 13,800 ft.

It is a genuine Himalayan pass crossing packed into five days from a base most backpackers already know.

What makes this Sar Pass trek different

  • The snow slide descent — the reason this trek has the reputation it does.
  • Grahan village on the route — a working Parvati valley settlement, not a campsite.
  • Four camps at rising altitude — proper progression to 13,800 ft.
  • Certified leader and full support — on a route that gets busy in season.
  • Written NDPS warning — Parvati Valley has a reputation and we address it directly.

Who this trip suits

Trekkers with reasonable fitness. Nagaru camp at 12,500 ft is exposed and cold, and the pass day is long. Not technical, but not a first trek either.

A note on seasons

May to early June is the season most people want, when the snow slide is at its best. Late September and October give clear skies and less snow. The pass is closed and unsafe from December to March.

Tour Plan

Day 01 KASOL TO GRAHAN | ALONG THE GRAHAN NALA

The Walk: About 9 km along the Grahan nala to a village at 7,700 ft. Five hours, following the stream most of the way.

Grahan: A working village of wooden houses that predates the trekking route entirely.

  • Top Places to Cover: Kasol, the Grahan nala, Grahan village.
  • Importance of Each Place: Grahan is one of the older settlements in Parvati Valley and its temple follows the local deity tradition rather than mainstream Hindu practice.
  • Things to Know: Ask before photographing people or entering temple courtyards - the local deity rules here are strict and outsiders are sometimes barred.

Meals: Lunch, Dinner | Overnight: Grahan camp

Day 02 GRAHAN TO MIN THACH | CLIMBING THROUGH THE PINE

The Walk: About 7 km through pine to a meadow at 11,000 ft. Five hours of steady climbing.

Min Thach: Thach means meadow, and this one has views back down the whole valley.

  • Top Places to Cover: Min Thach meadow, the pine forest, Grahan ridge.
  • Things to Know: The gradient steepens today. Pace yourself; tomorrow is shorter but harder.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Overnight: Min Thach camp

Day 03 MIN THACH TO NAGARU | THE COLDEST CAMP

The Walk: A short but steep 6 km to 12,500 ft.

Nagaru: The most exposed campsite of the trek, on a ridge with no shelter. It is a cold night and the reason many people remember this trek.

  • Top Places to Cover: Nagaru ridge, the tree line, Chanderkhani range viewpoint.
  • Things to Know: Nagaru is windy and cold. Sleep in thermals and a cap. Water sources are limited here.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Overnight: Nagaru camp

Day 04 SAR PASS CROSSING | 13,800 FT AND THE SNOW SLIDE

The Summit: An early climb to the pass at 13,800 ft.

The Slide: The descent on the far side is done by sliding down a long snow slope rather than walking - controlled, guided, and the thing everyone comes for.

To Biskeri: Continue down to Biskeri Thach at 11,000 ft. A long day.

  • Top Places to Cover: Sar Pass, the snow slide, Biskeri Thach.
  • Importance of Each Place: Sar means lake in the local dialect, after a small frozen tarn near the pass that gives the route its name.
  • Things to Know: The slide depends on snow cover and is not available late in the season. It is guided and done one at a time.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Overnight: Biskeri camp

Day 05 BISKERI TO BARSHAINI | DESCENT AND RETURN TO KASOL

Down: Through forest to the road head at Barshaini and drive back to Kasol. The trek ends there.

  • Top Places to Cover: Biskeri Thach, Pulga, Barshaini, Kasol.
  • Things to Know: Cannabis is illegal in Parvati Valley and possession carries serious penalties under the NDPS Act. Travellers found in breach are removed from the trip without refund.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch | Overnight: Journey ends
