Why These Places Matter

Burj Khalifa — 828 metres and the tallest building in the world since 2010, with nothing since coming close. Its shape was drawn from a three-petalled desert flower.

Dubai Creek — the saltwater inlet where the city began. Everything you saw today was built outward from this narrow strip of water.

• The Burj Khalifa lift reaches the 124th floor in about a minute, climbing roughly 10 metres a second.
• Wooden abra boats still cross the creek for about one dirham, the cheapest ride in the city.

Helpful Info

• Book the observation slot for about 45 minutes before sunset to get both day and night views.
• The deck is glassed in — carry a cloth to wipe the glass before photographing.
• Dress modestly at the creek and older areas; shoulders and knees covered is the norm.

Two buildings today, both of which look better in person than in photographs. The Dubai Frame is a giant gold rectangle standing in Zabeel Park, and you ride to the top and walk across a bridge with a glass floor — look down and there is nothing between your shoes and the park. Look one way and you see low, sand-coloured old Dubai. Turn around and it is towers. The Museum of the Future comes next, the silver ring covered in Arabic writing. Inside, each floor is set out as a scene from the year 2071.

Why These Places Matter

Dubai Frame — positioned deliberately so old Dubai sits inside the frame from one side and new Dubai from the other. It is the only spot in the city that shows both halves at once.

Museum of the Future — the writing on the outside is three quotations from Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, cut clean through the steel so they light up after dark. The building has no internal pillars, which is why it feels so open inside.

• The Dubai Frame is 150 m tall and 93 m wide, and opened in 2018.
• The Museum of the Future opened in February 2022 and stands 77 m tall.

Helpful Info

• The glass floor at the Frame is genuinely unnerving. If one of you dislikes heights, there is a solid walkway alongside.
• The Museum of the Future involves a fair amount of walking and standing. Comfortable shoes.
• Meals other than breakfast are on you today.

A 4x4 collects you in the afternoon and drives out to the red dunes. The driver stops to let air out of the tyres, then takes the car up and over the slopes — it is bumpy, it is loud, and you will both be laughing by the end of it. The camp afterwards is the softer half of the evening: a camel ride, henna if you want it, Arabic coffee and dates, dinner cooked over coals, and dancing on a small stage. Once the show ends the lights go low and the desert is quieter and darker than anywhere you have been all week.

Why These Places Matter

The red dunes — their colour comes from iron oxide in sand carried up from the Empty Quarter. Bedouin families crossed this same ground by camel within living memory.

• Drivers drop tyre pressure to roughly half the road setting so the tyres flatten and float over soft sand.
• Away from the camp lights, the desert sky here shows stars you will not see from any Indian city.

Helpful Info

• Eat lightly before the dune drive. Motion sickness is common on a full stomach.
• Closed shoes and a light shawl — it gets cold once the sun goes down.
• Tell the driver in advance about pregnancy, back or heart problems and they will take a gentler route.

The best evening of the week for a couple, and it is timed for sunset on purpose. You board at Dubai Marina Harbour and head out past the Palm and the Burj Al Arab while the light drops. There is no commentary and no crowd to work around — just the two of you on deck, the water going orange, and then the whole skyline switching on at once as you turn back. Bring a camera and then put it down for a while.

Why These Places Matter

Dubai Marina — a canal roughly 3 km long cut inland from the Gulf, with the towers built along both banks afterwards. Seeing it from the water is the only way to understand its scale.

Palm Jumeirah — an island made from dredged sand and rock, completed in 2007, which added around 56 km of new beachfront to the city.

• The Marina is one of the largest man-made canals in the world, dug before a single tower went up.
• Sunset in Dubai falls around 5.30 pm in December and closer to 7 pm in June.

Helpful Info

• Carry a light jacket. It is noticeably cooler on open water after sunset.
• Flat shoes only — heels are awkward on a deck and most boats ask you to remove them.
• Confirm your departure time the day before; sunset slots shift through the year.

Two very different kinds of colour today. Miracle Garden is a field of flowers arranged into arches, hearts, hillsides and a full-size Airbus A380 completely covered in blooms — it is unashamedly built for photographs and works brilliantly for them. In the evening you go to Global Village, where each country has its own pavilion selling its own food and crafts, and you can eat Turkish, Afghan and Thai food within a hundred metres of each other. Read the note below carefully: both places are seasonal.

Why These Places Matter

Miracle Garden — opened in 2013 and holds the record for the largest natural flower garden in the world, with well over 100 million flowers. It runs on recycled water in a place that gets almost no rain.

Global Village — running since 1997, with pavilions from more than 90 countries. It is the easiest place in Dubai to eat well for very little.

Day's Facts

• The flower-covered Airbus A380 at Miracle Garden is a real full-size aircraft frame.
• Global Village draws several million visitors each season, most of them in the evening.

Helpful Info

• Both close in summer. Miracle Garden usually runs mid-November to late May, and Global Village October to April. If you travel June to September they will not be open, and we will swap in alternatives — ask us before booking those dates.
• Go to Miracle Garden early morning. By noon there is no shade at all.
• Global Village is cash-and-card and very walkable. Wear comfortable shoes.

Nothing is scheduled today, and after six days you will want that. The simple option is the beach and a long lunch. If you would rather travel, Abu Dhabi is about ninety minutes away and the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is worth the drive on its own — white marble, inlaid flowers across the courtyard, and the largest hand-knotted carpet in the world in the main hall. Otherwise, Dubai Mall, the fountain show, or the gold and spice souks in Deira make an easy day without leaving the city.

Why These Places Matter

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque — completed in 2007 and built to hold around 40,000 worshippers. Craftsmen from several countries, India included, worked on the marble inlay and the carpet.

The Dubai Fountain — set in a lake at the foot of the Burj Khalifa, with jets that throw water higher than a fifty-storey building.

• The mosque's main carpet weighs about 35 tonnes and was knotted by hand by roughly 1,200 artisans.
• Gold in the Deira souk sells at the daily international rate, so bargaining applies only to the making charge.

Helpful Info

• The mosque has a strict dress code — arms and legs covered for both of you, hair covered for women. Abayas are lent free at the entrance.
• It is closed to visitors on Friday mornings for prayers.
• Today's activities and meals are not included in the package.

Last breakfast, check out, and a private transfer to the airport. If your flight is in the evening, ask the hotel to hold your bags — most will, at no charge — and use the free hours for the souks or one more walk along the marina. Buy dates and Arabic coffee at the spice souk rather than the airport; the same things cost a fraction there.

Why This Matters

The souks — hundreds of small shops in covered lanes beside the creek, working the same trade in the same place since long before the towers went up.

• Dates from the Gulf come in dozens of varieties; medjool and khidri are the two most travellers carry home.
• Dubai airport is one of the world's busiest for international passengers, so allow extra time at security.

Helpful Info

• Reach the airport three hours before an international flight.
• Keep gold receipts — Indian customs will ask, and duty-free allowances are limited.
