Three stops today and children tend to rate them in reverse order. The Dubai Frame is a giant gold rectangle you ride to the top of, with a glass floor panel that makes everyone shriek. The Museum of the Future is the silver ring covered in Arabic writing, laid out inside as scenes from the year 2071. AYA Universe is the one they will talk about afterwards — a series of dark rooms where light, sound and mirrors build spaces that feel like other planets, and you are allowed to touch and play rather than just look.

Why These Places Matter

Dubai Frame — placed so that old Dubai sits inside the frame on one side and the new city on the other, which makes it a good way to explain the place to a child in one sentence.

Museum of the Future — the writing outside is three quotations cut clean through the steel, lit from within at night. There are no internal pillars anywhere in the building.

The morning is the Dolphinarium in Creek Park — a dolphin and seal show pitched squarely at children, about forty-five minutes and genuinely funny. The afternoon changes gear completely. A 4x4 collects you and drives into the red dunes, tipping up and over the slopes while everyone in the back shouts. At the camp there is a quad bike ride, camel rides, henna, dinner cooked over coals and a Tanoura dancer who spins in a lit skirt without stopping for what feels like ten minutes. Dinner is included tonight.

Why These Places Matter

The red dunes — coloured by iron oxide in sand blown up from the Empty Quarter. Bedouin families crossed this ground by camel within living memory.

Tanoura — an Egyptian folk dance descended from Sufi whirling, where the dancer spins continuously in a weighted, lit skirt.

• Drivers drop tyre pressure to about half the road setting so the tyres float over soft sand.
• Away from camp lights the desert sky shows stars you will not see from any Indian city.

• Quad bikes have a minimum age, usually 16 to drive alone. Younger children ride as passengers with an adult or watch. Please check with us before booking if this matters to you.

A full day at Atlantis on the Palm and the best day of the trip for most children. Aquaventure has more than thirty slides, a river circuit that carries you around the park for as long as you want, a wave pool and a private beach. The Leap of Faith drops almost vertically through a clear tube running along the floor of a lagoon full of sharks. Next door, the Lost Chambers is an aquarium built as the ruins of Atlantis, with tunnels running under the tanks and rays passing overhead.

Aquaventure — one of the largest waterparks in the world, built on the Palm Jumeirah, which is land that did not exist twenty-five years ago.

The Lost Chambers — holds tens of thousands of marine animals across chambers themed as a sunken city, and is the calm half of the day when children need it.

• The park has over 30 slides and a river circuit more than a kilometre long.
• Height limits apply to the bigger slides, generally around 120 cm.

• Arrive at opening. Queues on the big slides double by midday.
• Check slide height limits before you go so nobody is turned away at the steps.
• Lockers and towels cost extra inside. Waterproof sunscreen is essential.

Breakfast, check out, and a private transfer to the airport. If your flight is late, most hotels will hold your bags at no charge, which buys a few free hours. The spice and gold souks in Deira are the cheap and interesting last stop — dates, Arabic coffee and saffron all cost a fraction of the airport price, and children like the smell of the spice lanes more than they expect to.
