Trip Highlights

Mauritius rewards people who stop moving. The island is small enough to drive across in three hours, which tempts every operator into cramming it with day trips. This itinerary does the opposite — two proper sightseeing days, three built around the lagoon at Île aux Cerfs, and the rest left deliberately empty.

Nine nights at a beach resort on the east coast, from ₹95,900 per person. What makes this Mauritius tour package from India different is that the water activities are already paid for. The undersea walk and the tube ride at Île aux Cerfs are usually sold to you on the beach at whatever the going rate is that morning; here they are in the price, along with both full-day island tours and the Nepalese Bridge.

It suits honeymooners, families with children old enough for the lagoon, and anyone who wants a beach holiday with a few real outings rather than a packed schedule. The east coast is the windward side, so it stays breezy — a relief in summer.

One honest note before you book: the itinerary goes to Île aux Cerfs on three separate days, because each activity is sold as its own excursion. It works, but we can combine them if you would rather free up time for the west coast.

Tour Plan

DAY 1: Arrival in Mauritius — Transfer to the Resort

You land at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam airport in the south-east and a driver takes you to the resort on the east coast, around forty minutes. Immigration is usually quick, but they do ask for your return ticket and hotel booking, so keep both to hand. Check in and do nothing else. The lagoon is bright and breezy in the afternoon, and the first evening is best spent on the beach.

Top Places to Cover

  • East coast lagoon — shallow, protected water directly in front of the resort

Why This Matters

The east coast — the windward side of the island, which keeps it cooler and breezier than the west. The reef sits close in here, so the water stays flat and swimmable.

Day's Facts

  • Mauritius is entirely surrounded by one of the world's largest unbroken coral reefs.
  • The dodo lived only here and was extinct within about a century of human arrival.

Helpful Info

  • Visa on arrival is free for Indians, but carry printed copies of your return ticket and hotel voucher.
  • The Mauritian rupee is not the Indian rupee — change money at the airport counter for better rates than the resort.
  • Plug points are UK three-pin. Carry an adapter.
DAY 2: North Island Tour — Port Louis and Fort Adelaide

A full day north by shared coach. It starts in Port Louis, the capital, which is busier and rougher than the resort strip and all the better for it. Fort Adelaide, the old citadel above the city, gives you the whole harbour in one view. The rest of the day works through the Caudan Waterfront and the colonial quarter. Bring water and a hat — Port Louis sits in a bowl and traps heat.

Top Places to Cover

  • Port Louis — the capital, its market and colonial streets
  • Fort Adelaide (the Citadel) — a hilltop fort with the best view of the harbour
  • Caudan Waterfront — a redeveloped dock area of shops and cafes

Why These Places Matter

Fort Adelaide — built by the British in the 1830s, positioned to watch the harbour and the town at once. It was never fired on.

Port Louis — founded by the French in 1735 and named after King Louis XV. The street names, the market and the food still carry that layered French, British and Indian history.

Day's Facts

  • Around two-thirds of Mauritians are of Indian origin, most descended from indentured labourers brought in the 19th century.
  • Aapravasi Ghat in Port Louis, where those labourers first landed, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Helpful Info

  • Port Louis is hot and shadeless by midday. Carry water and cover your head.
  • The Central Market is best in the morning, before the produce sells out.
  • Lunch and dinner are at your own cost today.
DAY 3: South Island Tour — Valley of Colours and Grand Bassin

South today, and the more scenic of the two coach tours. The first stop is La Vallée des Couleurs, a nature park on an old volcanic site where the earth genuinely comes out in bands of different colours. The route also takes in Grand Bassin, the crater lake that is the most important Hindu site on the island. There are optional add-ons at the park such as zip lines, payable there if you want them.

Top Places to Cover

  • La Vallée des Couleurs — a nature park with 23 shades of coloured volcanic earth
  • Grand Bassin (Ganga Talao) — a sacred crater lake and temple complex
  • Black River Gorges viewpoint — forested valleys and waterfalls

Why These Places Matter

Grand Bassin — the holiest Hindu site in Mauritius. Water from the Ganga was ceremonially poured into the lake in 1972, and during Maha Shivaratri hundreds of thousands walk here on foot from across the island.

La Vallée des Couleurs — the colours come from volcanic ash weathering at different rates, leaving mineral bands in the soil. There are few places on earth where this is visible at this scale.

Day's Facts

  • The Mangal Mahadev statue at Grand Bassin stands 33 m and is among the tallest Shiva statues anywhere.
  • Maha Shivaratri here is the largest Hindu festival outside India.

Helpful Info

  • Dress respectfully at Grand Bassin — it is an active place of worship, not a viewpoint.
  • Remove shoes before entering the temple areas.
  • Zip lines and quad biking at the park are optional and not included.
DAY 4: Île aux Cerfs Day Tour

A boat across to Île aux Cerfs, the island off the east coast that most Mauritius photographs are taken on. The lagoon here is the shallow turquoise kind and the beach is as good as it looks. It is also popular, so the middle of the day gets crowded around the jetty — walk fifteen minutes along the sand and most of the crowd disappears.

Top Places to Cover

  • Île aux Cerfs — a small island with the island's best-known beaches
  • Grande Rivière Sud-Est waterfall — often included on the boat route

Why These Places Matter

Île aux Cerfs — the name means "island of deer", from the deer the Dutch introduced centuries ago. There are none left, but the name stuck.

The lagoon — protected by the reef, so the water stays shallow and calm well out from shore. It is one of the safest places on the island to swim with children.

Day's Facts

  • The island covers about 87 hectares and has no permanent residents.
  • Its golf course was designed by Bernhard Langer and is surrounded by sea on three sides.

Helpful Info

  • Lunch is not included and island restaurants are priced for a captive audience.
  • Take reef shoes if you have them — parts of the shallows are coral rubble.
  • Sun here is stronger than it feels because of the breeze. Reapply sunscreen often.
DAY 5: Port Louis Central Market — Free Day

Nothing scheduled today. The usual outing is the Central Market in Port Louis, which is the real thing rather than a tourist market — produce, spices, textiles and street food on the upper floor. Local transfers can be arranged through the resort. Haggle, but gently; prices are not wildly inflated. If markets are not your thing, this is simply a beach day, which is a perfectly good use of it.

Top Places to Cover

  • Port Louis Central Market — produce, spices and textiles under one roof
  • Resort beach — the alternative, and no worse a choice

Why This Matters

The Central Market — trading on this site since the 19th century. The food stalls upstairs are where you find dholl puri, the Mauritian street food that came directly from Bihar with indentured labourers and is now the national snack.

Day's Facts

  • Dholl puri is a flatbread stuffed with split peas, eaten with bean curry and chutney — Mauritius eats hundreds of thousands daily.
  • Mauritian Creole borrows heavily from French, with Bhojpuri words layered in.

Helpful Info

  • Watch your bag in the market crowds, as you would in any busy Indian market.
  • Buy vanilla and tea here rather than at the airport — the price difference is large.
  • Today's transfers and meals are at your own cost.
DAY 6: Tube Ride at Île aux Cerfs

Back to the lagoon for the tube ride — an inflatable towed behind a speedboat across the flat water inside the reef. It is short, loud and good fun, and it is included rather than sold to you on the day. Wear something you do not mind soaking and leave your phone in the bag. If anyone would rather sit it out, the beach is right there.

Top Places to Cover

  • Île aux Cerfs lagoon — the tube ride course, inside the reef

Why This Matters

Riding inside the reef — the coral barrier keeps the water flat even when the open sea is rough, which is why watersports run here almost every day of the year. Few beach destinations can promise that.

Day's Facts

  • Mauritius has around 150 km of coral reef surrounding the island.
  • The lagoon rarely exceeds three metres deep in most places inside the reef.

Helpful Info

  • Hold on with both hands and keep your knees soft — most bruises come from stiff legs.
  • Not recommended if you have back or neck problems, or are pregnant.
  • Waterproof phone pouches are worth carrying; the boat gets very wet.
DAY 7: Nepalese Bridge at La Vallée des Couleurs

A return to La Vallée des Couleurs, this time for the Nepalese Bridge — a suspended walkway strung across the valley with the coloured earth below and the coast in the distance. It moves underfoot, which is rather the point. This is the second visit to the same park, since Day 3 passed through it on the south tour. If you would rather use this day differently, tell us before you travel and we will swap it.

Top Places to Cover

  • Nepalese Bridge — a suspension footbridge over the coloured earth valley
  • 23 Coloured Earth — the mineral bands seen from a different angle
  • Park waterfalls — several drops within walking distance of the bridge

Why These Places Matter

The Nepalese Bridge — built in the Himalayan style, deliberately flexible so it sways as you cross. It gives the only elevated view over the coloured earth.

The park's waterfalls — fed by streams cutting through soft volcanic rock, which is the same process that exposed the coloured layers in the first place.

Day's Facts

  • The park protects around 400 hectares of forest and includes several endemic Mauritian plant species.
  • The colours are strongest after rain, when the minerals in the soil are wet.

Helpful Info

  • Not advisable if you have a serious fear of heights — the bridge moves noticeably.
  • Wear shoes with grip; park paths get slippery after rain.
  • If you would rather swap this day for Chamarel or the west coast, tell us before departure.
DAY 8: Free Day on the East Coast

A full day with nothing booked. Most people use the resort — the lagoon, the pool, a spa treatment — and that is genuinely the right call this far into a ten-day trip. If you want to move, Belle Mare beach is a short drive north, and the resort can arrange a catamaran or a glass-bottom boat locally. Both are paid on the day.

Top Places to Cover

  • Belle Mare Beach — a long white-sand stretch a short drive north
  • Catamaran or glass-bottom boat — optional, arranged through the resort

Why This Matters

Belle Mare — often rated the finest beach on the island, with unusually white sand because it is ground coral rather than volcanic rock. It is long enough that you can always find an empty stretch.

Day's Facts

  • Mauritius has around 150 km of coastline, most of it inside the reef.
  • Glass-bottom boats here run over living coral gardens close to shore.

Helpful Info

  • Book any boat trip the evening before; morning slots fill first and the sea is calmest then.
  • Public beaches have no lifeguards on weekdays. Swim where others are swimming.
  • Today's activities and meals are at your own cost.
DAY 9: Undersea Walk at Île aux Cerfs

The undersea walk, and the best thing on the itinerary if you cannot dive. You wear a weighted helmet fed with air from the surface and walk on the sea floor in about three metres of water, with the fish coming to you. You do not need to swim and your head stays dry, which surprises people. Afterwards the rest of the day is on the island.

Top Places to Cover

  • Undersea walk site, Île aux Cerfs — a shallow sandy shelf inside the lagoon

Why This Matters

The undersea walk — uses the same principle as a diving bell: air pumped down keeps the helmet full so water never rises past your shoulders. It lets non-swimmers and nervous people see a reef properly, which snorkelling often does not.

Day's Facts

  • The helmet weighs around 30 kg in air but feels almost weightless underwater.
  • Common sightings here include sergeant majors, parrotfish and the occasional moray eel.

Helpful Info

  • Not suitable with ear, sinus, respiratory or heart problems, or during pregnancy. Tell us in advance.
  • Contact lens wearers should mention it — the guides will advise.
  • Do not touch the coral. It is protected, and much of it stings.
DAY 10: Departure

Breakfast, check out, and a private transfer back to the airport. Allow the full forty minutes plus your check-in window. If you have a late flight, ask the resort about a day room or luggage storage — the east coast has nowhere obvious to wait out an afternoon.

Top Places to Cover

  • Resort to airport road — sugarcane fields most of the way south

Why This Matters

The sugarcane — cane covers much of the island's farmland and shaped its whole history, since it was the reason indentured labourers were brought from India in the first place. The fields you pass are the direct link to why two-thirds of Mauritians are of Indian descent.

Day's Facts

  • Sugar was the island's main export for over 200 years and still covers a large share of farmland.
  • Mauritian rum is made from fresh cane juice and is worth carrying home.

Helpful Info

  • Duty-free at the airport is good for rum and vanilla, but the market in Port Louis is cheaper.
  • Allow at least three hours before an international flight, plus the drive.
  • Breakfast at the resort is included.

Before You Go

Ten days here is a proper rest rather than a tour. If you would rather stay on the calmer west coast, or add a few nights in Réunion, tell us your dates and we will rebuild it.
