A valley trek rather than a summit, which makes it one of the gentler Himalayan routes and one of the most rewarding. This Har Ki Dun trek follows the Supin through Govind Pashu Vihar National Park to a hanging valley at 11,675 ft with Swargarohini at its head.

Osla and Seema on the way are working villages with wooden architecture that has changed little in centuries.

What makes this Har Ki Dun trek different

  • A valley, not a summit push — gradual gain and no exposed ridge.
  • Two nights at the valley floor — so you get a full day to explore rather than turning straight around.
  • Osla village on the route — traditional Garhwali kathkuni architecture, still lived in.
  • National park permits handled — the route runs through Govind Pashu Vihar.
  • Suits older trekkers — the gradient is forgiving compared with most Himalayan routes.

Who this trip suits

Trekkers who want Himalayan scenery without a summit day. Fit walkers of most ages manage this comfortably. Around 11 km on the longer days.

A note on seasons

April to June and September to November. April and May bring rhododendron along the lower trail. September and October give the clearest views of Swargarohini and firm underfoot conditions. Runs in snow December to March for those wanting a winter version, though the Taluka road often closes. Not operated in monsoon.

Tour Plan

Day 01 DEHRADUN TO SANKRI | THE TONS VALLEY ROAD

The Drive: About 200 km and nine to ten hours along the Tons through Mori. Sankri is the road head at roughly 6,400 ft.

  • Top Places to Cover: Mori, Purola, Sankri.
  • Things to Know: Long day with no shortcut. Gear check in the evening with your trek leader.

Meals: Dinner | Overnight: Sankri guesthouse

Day 02 SANKRI TO SEEMA | ALONG THE SUPIN RIVER

To Taluka: A 12 km drive on a rough track.

The Walk: About 11 km along the Supin to Seema at 8,500 ft, through walnut, chestnut and pine, crossing the river twice. Five to six hours.

  • Top Places to Cover: Taluka, the Supin river, Datmir, Gangad, Seema.
  • Importance of Each Place: The villages along this valley grow amaranth and rajma at altitude and their houses are built in kathkuni style, alternating stone and cedar with no mortar.
  • Things to Know: The Taluka road is rough and sometimes impassable, in which case the walk starts from Sankri and adds 12 km.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Overnight: Seema camp

Day 03 SEEMA TO HAR KI DUN | INTO THE HANGING VALLEY

The Best Day: About 11 km to the valley floor at 11,675 ft, with the gradient easing as the valley opens out. Six to seven hours.

Osla: The village sits above the trail on the far bank, with a temple to Duryodhana - one of very few anywhere.

Arrival: Camp on the valley floor with Swargarohini filling the head of it.

  • Top Places to Cover: Osla village, Duryodhana temple, the Har Ki Dun valley, Swargarohini.
  • Importance of Each Place: Har Ki Dun means valley of the gods, and local tradition holds this was the route the Pandavas took to heaven, with Swargarohini as the stairway.
  • Things to Know: Osla is a living village - ask before photographing people or entering courtyards.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Overnight: Har Ki Dun camp

Day 04 HAR KI DUN EXPLORATION | JAUNDHAR GLACIER VIEWPOINT

A Day in the Valley: No packing up. Walk further up towards the Jaundhar Glacier for those who want it, or simply spend the day at the valley floor.

The Setting: Swargarohini stands at the head with Black Peak and Bandarpunch on the flanks.

  • Top Places to Cover: Jaundhar Glacier approach, Maninda Tal, the valley floor.
  • Importance of Each Place: The Jaundhar Glacier feeds the Supin and is the reason the valley holds meadow rather than forest at this altitude.
  • Things to Know: The glacier approach adds 6 to 8 km round trip and is optional.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Overnight: Har Ki Dun camp

Day 05 HAR KI DUN TO SEEMA | DESCENT WITH THE VALLEY BEHIND YOU

Down: The same route in reverse, about 11 km and five hours, with the valley view behind you the whole way.

  • Top Places to Cover: Har Ki Dun, Osla, Seema.
  • Things to Know: Descent is easier on lungs and harder on knees. Poles help.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Overnight: Seema camp

Out to Taluka: Down to Taluka and drive back to Sankri. Hot water and a bed.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Overnight: Sankri guesthouse

Day 07 SANKRI TO DEHRADUN | RETURN DRIVE
