Harsil, a serene village and tourist hill station in Uttarkashi district, Uttarakhand, is nestled on the banks of the Bhagirathi River, en route to the sacred Gangotri. Elevated at 9,005 feet (2,745 meters) above sea level, it offers a tranquil escape with stunning natural beauty.
The name “Harsil” has its roots in local legend. According to folklore, the Bhagirathi and Jalandhari rivers once quarreled over their significance. To mediate, Lord Vishnu, known as Hari, transformed himself into a great stone or “shila” and absorbed their discord. Thus, the rivers’ tumultuous flow calmed, and the area was named Hari-shila, later shortened to Harsil.
Located 78 kilometers from Uttarkashi and 30 kilometers from the expansive Gangotri National Park, which spans 1,553 square kilometers, Harsil is renowned for its pristine environment and apple orchards. The area’s natural splendor, combined with its role as a gateway to Gangotri, makes Harsil a charming and peaceful destination. Visitors are drawn to its lush landscapes, tranquil riversides, and the picturesque backdrop of the Himalayan foothills.

Tour Plan
Gather and report at Preet Vihar Metro Station at 10 PM to meet our trip captain. Depart for Harsil around 10:30 PM. Overnight journey from Delhi to Harsil.
Arrive in Uttarkashi by morning, freshen up, and have breakfast before continuing your journey to Harsil Valley, with a stop at Khedi Waterfall along the way. Reach Harsil in the evening and check into your hotel or homestay. If time allows, explore the local Harsil village. Enjoy a bonfire session in the evening followed by dinner, and then relax with an overnight stay.
Wake up early, enjoy breakfast, and drive to Lanka Bridge, where the 2.5 km Gartang Gali trek begins. Known as the world’s deadliest skywalk, this thrilling trek offers breathtaking views near the Indo-China border. Next, visit the Gangotri Temple, nestled in the scenic town of Gangotri and dedicated to Goddess Ganga. Explore Surya Kund, a small trek near the temple, before returning to Harsil. Enjoy dinner and an overnight stay at your accommodation.
Wake up early, enjoy breakfast, and embark on a 2.5 km trek to Lama Top, renowned for its panoramic views of Harsil Valley and the Himalayas. Afterward, visit Bagori Village, known for its intriguing history related to the Indo-Tibet border. Board the vehicle to Delhi in the late afternoon, with a pitstop for dinner around Rishikesh or Chamba. Arrive in Delhi early the next morning, carrying fond memories and photographs of Harsil Valley.
