Two very different halves of the North East in one trip. Kaziranga is flat alluvial grassland on the Brahmaputra holding the densest one-horned rhino population anywhere on earth. Meghalaya is limestone hill country with the highest rainfall on the planet.

Guwahati sits between them, which is what makes this Kaziranga Meghalaya tour package work as a single route rather than two separate trips.

What makes this Kaziranga Meghalaya tour package different

  • Three safaris included — one elephant and two jeep, across different ranges.
  • Elephant safari in the Central range — the only way to get genuinely close to rhino in tall grass.
  • Both halves given real time — three nights in Assam, three in Meghalaya.
  • Honest on the season — Kaziranga shuts for monsoon and we will not sell you a booking inside it.
  • Local Khasi guide at Mawphlang — because the customary law is the point.

Who this trip suits

Wildlife photographers, families and anyone who wants both a national park and a hill trip without doubling their flights. No trekking required.

A note on seasons

November to April. Kaziranga gates open around 1 November and close roughly mid-May when the Brahmaputra floods the grassland – the park is genuinely shut in monsoon, not merely quiet. February and March give the best grass height for sightings. Meghalaya is clearest from November to March.

Tour Plan

Day 01 GUWAHATI TO KAZIRANGA | ARRIVAL AT THE BRAHMAPUTRA GRASSLANDS

The Drive: Pickup at Guwahati (GAU) and east about 200 km along the Brahmaputra plain, roughly five hours.

Check In: Accommodation is near Kohora, the central range gate and the main visitor hub.

Evening: Free. The tea gardens either side of the highway are worth a stop on the way in.

  • Top Places to Cover: Brahmaputra plain, Kohora, Kaziranga tea gardens.
  • Importance of Each Place: Kaziranga was declared a reserve in 1905 after Lady Curzon visited and found no rhinos to see. It now holds roughly two-thirds of the world one-horned rhino population.
  • Things to Know: Book arrival flights before noon so you reach Kaziranga in daylight. Safari permits require full names and ID numbers, so send passenger details at booking.

Meals: Dinner | Overnight: Kaziranga

Day 02 KAZIRANGA SAFARIS | ELEPHANT AT DAWN, JEEP IN THE AFTERNOON

Elephant Safari: An early start in the Central range. Elephant-back is the only way to get close to rhino in elephant grass that stands well above head height - a jeep simply cannot see over it.

Jeep Safari: Afternoon in the Western Bagori range or Eastern Agoratoli. Rhino, wild water buffalo, swamp deer and hog deer are near-certain sightings.

On Tigers: Kaziranga has among the highest tiger densities of any protected area in the world, but the grass is tall and sightings are rare. Nobody honest will promise you one.

  • Top Places to Cover: Central Kohora range, Western Bagori range, Eastern Agoratoli range, the watchtowers.
  • Importance of Each Place: Kaziranga became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985 and a tiger reserve in 2006. The Eastern range is the best for birdlife, with pelicans and adjutant storks on the beels.
  • Things to Know: Ranges and vehicles are allotted by the forest department, not chosen. Elephant safari slots are limited and sell out - they are booked in advance and cannot be changed. Wear neutral colours.

Meals: Breakfast, Dinner | Overnight: Kaziranga

Day 03 MORNING SAFARI | TRANSFER TO SHILLONG VIA UMIAM LAKE

One More Drive: A final morning jeep safari, usually in a different range from yesterday.

South to the Hills: Then roughly 250 km and six hours to Shillong, climbing out of the plain into the Khasi hills.

Umiam Lake: The reservoir viewpoint just before Shillong, then check in and walk Police Bazaar.

  • Top Places to Cover: Kaziranga safari range, Umiam Lake, Police Bazaar, Shillong.
  • Importance of Each Place: The change from Assam floodplain to Meghalaya plateau happens over about forty minutes of driving and is one of the sharpest landscape transitions in India.
  • Things to Know: This is a long day with an early start. Eat before the drive; there is little on the road between Nagaon and Jorabat.

Meals: Breakfast, Dinner | Overnight: Shillong

Day 04 SHILLONG TO SOHRA | NOHKALIKAI FALLS & MAWSMAI CAVE

Elephant Falls: A three-tier fall on the city edge, named after a rock the 1897 earthquake destroyed.

Sohra: Fifty-five kilometres on across open moorland. Nohkalikai drops roughly 340 m into a plunge pool and is the tallest plunge waterfall in India.

Mawsmai Cave: A lit limestone passage about 150 m long that you walk rather than crawl.

Seven Sisters: The Nohsngithiang falls from the Thangkharang side if the light holds.

  • Top Places to Cover: Elephant Falls, Nohkalikai Falls, Mawsmai Cave, Seven Sisters Falls, Arwah Cave.
  • Importance of Each Place: Sohra and neighbouring Mawsynram trade the record for the wettest inhabited place on earth. The bare moorland is the result of centuries of rain stripping the soil, not drought.
  • Things to Know: Waterfalls run hardest June to October and thin considerably by March. One section of Mawsmai Cave is a genuine squeeze.

Meals: Breakfast, Dinner | Overnight: Sohra

Day 05 MAWLYNNONG & DAWKI | ROOT BRIDGE AND THE CLEAR RIVER

Mawlynnong: Called the cleanest village in Asia by a travel magazine in 2003, and kept that way by communal rotas. The bamboo sky walk lifts you above the canopy toward Bangladesh.

Riwai Root Bridge: A single-decker living root bridge nearby - the Khasi train Ficus elastica roots across streams over decades until they carry weight.

Dawki: The Umngot at the Bangladesh border. In dry months the water is clear enough that the boats appear to float above their shadow.

  • Top Places to Cover: Mawlynnong, the sky walk, Riwai root bridge, Dawki, Umngot river.
  • Importance of Each Place: Root bridges are a form of engineering measured in generations. Some in these hills are believed to be over 150 years old and get stronger with age.
  • Things to Know: Boats at Dawki are hired per boat, not per person. The river is genuinely clear only November to March. Carry ID - this is a border area.

Meals: Breakfast, Dinner | Overnight: Shillong

Day 06 MAWPHLANG SACRED GROVE | LAITLUM CANYON

Mawphlang: A forest protected under Khasi customary law for centuries, where nothing at all may be removed. The local guides explain the belief system, and that is the value of the hour.

Laitlum: A grassland ridge dropping away on three sides, with a footpath descending to villages that have no road.

Evening: Free in Shillong.

  • Top Places to Cover: Mawphlang Sacred Grove, Laitlum Canyon, Don Bosco Museum.
  • Importance of Each Place: Sacred groves are an ancient conservation practice and Mawphlang is among the best preserved anywhere in India.
  • Things to Know: Take the local guide at Mawphlang. Laitlum has no railings and the drop is sheer.

Meals: Breakfast, Dinner | Overnight: Shillong

Day 07 RETURN TO GUWAHATI | TRIP CONCLUDES

The Drive Down: Breakfast, then four hours to Guwahati.

  • Top Places to Cover: Umiam Lake, Guwahati airport.
  • Things to Know: Book departure flights after 3 pm. This road holds up regularly.

Meals: Breakfast | Overnight: Journey ends
