A short hills trip that does not try to do too much. This Mussoorie Dhanaulti tour package gives two nights in Mussoorie for the Mall, Gun Hill and Lal Tibba, a day out at Dhanaulti where the deodar is thick and the crowds are not, and a stop in Dehradun on the way back.

Good for a first hill trip, a long weekend, or anyone who wants the Himalaya visible on the horizon without a nine-hour drive to reach it.

What makes this Mussoorie Dhanaulti tour package different

  • Kempty before the crowds — scheduled early, because by eleven it is unrecognisable.
  • Landour included — the quiet cantonment above Mussoorie that most day-trippers never reach.
  • Dhanaulti given a full day — not a two-hour detour.
  • Dehradun on the return — Robber Cave and Sahastradhara rather than a straight drive home.
  • Private vehicle throughout — the hill roads here are not suited to shared transport.

Who this trip suits

Families, couples and first-time hill travellers. No trekking beyond a short walk to Surkanda Devi, which is optional.

A note on seasons

March to June is peak, when the plains are hot and the hills fill up – book early for weekends. September to November gives the clearest views of the snow line. December and January bring occasional snow to Dhanaulti and Lal Tibba, which is the main draw then. July and August are monsoon with real landslide risk on the Mussoorie road.

Tour Plan

Day 01 DELHI TO MUSSOORIE | GUN HILL ROPEWAY & MALL ROAD EVENING

The Drive: Depart Delhi early. Around 290 km and six to seven hours via Dehradun, with the last 35 km climbing hard.

Gun Hill: The second-highest point in Mussoorie, reached by ropeway from the Mall. It takes its name from a cannon once fired here at midday so the town could set its clocks.

The Mall: On foot at dusk. Mussoorie was laid out in the 1820s and the Mall has been its spine ever since.

  • Top Places to Cover: Gun Hill, Mall Road, Library Bazaar, Mussoorie Lake.
  • Importance of Each Place: Mussoorie was called the Queen of Hills by the British and became the summer retreat for the Doon valley cantonments.
  • Things to Know: The Mall is closed to vehicles in the evenings. Parking is limited and expensive - your driver will drop and collect.

Meals: Dinner | Overnight: Mussoorie

Day 02 MUSSOORIE FULL DAY | KEMPTY FALLS, CAMEL BACK ROAD & LAL TIBBA

Kempty Falls: Fifteen kilometres out and best seen before nine. It was developed as a picnic spot by a British officer in the 1830s and is now the busiest single site in Mussoorie.

Camel Back Road: A three-kilometre level walk with a rock formation shaped like a resting camel, and the best sunset stretch in town.

Lal Tibba: The highest point at around 2,275 m, in Landour cantonment. On a clear day the telescope picks out Bandarpunch and the Gangotri group.

Landour: Char Dukan, four small tea shops that have fed the cantonment for generations. Ruskin Bond has lived up here for decades.

  • Top Places to Cover: Kempty Falls, Camel Back Road, Lal Tibba, Landour, Char Dukan, Company Garden.
  • Importance of Each Place: Landour was established as a convalescent depot for British soldiers in 1827 and remains a cantonment, which is why it has stayed quiet while Mussoorie grew.
  • Things to Know: Kempty is genuinely overwhelmed by 11 am in season. Landour roads are narrow and steep - larger vehicles are restricted.

Meals: Breakfast, Dinner | Overnight: Mussoorie

Day 03 DHANAULTI EXCURSION | ECO PARK & SURKANDA DEVI

To Dhanaulti: Twenty-five kilometres east and noticeably higher, under thick deodar and with a fraction of the traffic.

Eco Park: Two forested sections, Amber and Dhara, with walking trails and a zip line.

Surkanda Devi: Eight kilometres further, one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, at around 2,750 m. A steep 1.5 km climb from Kaddukhal, or a ropeway if you prefer.

Return: Back to Mussoorie for the night.

  • Top Places to Cover: Dhanaulti, Eco Park (Amber and Dhara), Surkanda Devi temple, Kaddukhal.
  • Importance of Each Place: Surkanda Devi is where the head of Sati is believed to have fallen, and the view from the temple takes in the full Garhwal snow line on a clear day.
  • Things to Know: The Surkanda climb is short but steep and unshaded. Snow can close the Dhanaulti road for a day or two after heavy falls in January.

Meals: Breakfast, Dinner | Overnight: Mussoorie

Day 04 DEHRADUN & DEPARTURE | ROBBER CAVE AND THE ROAD HOME

Down the Hill: Descend to Dehradun, about an hour.

Robber Cave: Locally called Guchhupani, a narrow gorge where a stream disappears underground and re-emerges a hundred metres on. You walk through the water.

Sahastradhara: Sulphur springs on the northern edge of the city, if time allows.

Departure: Depart for Delhi after lunch.

  • Top Places to Cover: Robber Cave, Sahastradhara, Forest Research Institute, Dehradun.
  • Importance of Each Place: The Forest Research Institute building, in Greco-Roman revival style and set in 450 hectares, is one of the largest brick structures in the world and worth a photo stop.
  • Things to Know: Carry sandals you can walk in water for Robber Cave. Depart Dehradun by 2 pm to reach Delhi at a reasonable hour.

Meals: Breakfast | Overnight: Journey ends
