Two of Uttarakhand best high-altitude viewpoints in one loop. This Auli Chopta Tungnath tour package combines a ski slope at 8,200 ft with Nanda Devi filling the skyline, and the road head for the highest Shiva temple in the world.

Both are short walks rather than expeditions, which is what makes this doable in five days without any trekking experience.

What makes this Auli Chopta Tungnath tour package different

  • Auli ropeway included — a 4 km cable car, one of the longest in Asia.
  • Tungnath and Chandrashila — a genuine 12,073 ft temple and a summit 1,000 ft above it.
  • Nanda Devi views — India second-highest peak, visible from Auli on a clear morning.
  • Local guide on the climb — the Tungnath path ices over and is not always obvious in snow.
  • Honest about the drives — two long Alaknanda valley days, and we say so upfront.

Who this trip suits

Reasonably fit travellers comfortable with a 3.5 km uphill walk. Not suitable for anyone unable to manage stairs, and the long driving days are genuinely long.

A note on seasons

March to June and September to November. Tungnath temple closes for winter around Diwali when the deity moves to Mukku Math, though the trail stays walkable in snow. December to February gives snow at Auli and a white Chandrashila, but the Chopta road can close after heavy falls. July and August are monsoon with real landslide risk on the Alaknanda road.

Tour Plan

Day 01 RISHIKESH TO JOSHIMATH | THE PANCH PRAYAG ROAD

The Long Drive: Depart early. Around 250 km and nine to ten hours along the Alaknanda.

The Confluences: The road passes Devprayag, where the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda meet and the river becomes the Ganga, then Rudraprayag and Karnaprayag. These are three of the Panch Prayag, the five sacred confluences of Garhwal.

Joshimath: At 6,150 ft, one of the four maths established by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century, and the winter seat of Badrinath.

  • Top Places to Cover: Devprayag, Rudraprayag, Karnaprayag, Joshimath, Narsingh temple.
  • Importance of Each Place: At Devprayag you can see two rivers of visibly different colour meeting and becoming one - the point at which the Ganga formally begins.
  • Things to Know: This is a full driving day with no shortcut. Start at first light. The Alaknanda road is prone to delay from roadwork.

Meals: Dinner | Overnight: Joshimath

Day 02 AULI | ASIA LONGEST ROPEWAY & GORSON BUGYAL

The Ropeway: The Auli cable car runs about 4 km from Joshimath, among the longest in Asia, climbing to the slopes at roughly 9,200 ft.

At the Top: The ski runs, and an artificial lake built to feed the snow cannons - one of the highest man-made lakes anywhere. On a clear morning Nanda Devi, India second-highest peak at 7,816 m, stands directly ahead with Trishul and Hathi Parbat beside it.

Gorson Bugyal: A three-kilometre walk across meadow for the wider panorama, easy underfoot in summer and a snow walk in winter.

  • Top Places to Cover: Auli ropeway, ski slopes, artificial lake, Gorson Bugyal, Nanda Devi viewpoint.
  • Importance of Each Place: Auli is India best-known ski destination and has hosted the SAF Winter Games. Nanda Devi was long thought unclimbable and its sanctuary remains closed to visitors.
  • Things to Know: The ropeway closes in high wind and occasionally for maintenance. Tickets are sold on the day. Carry sunglasses - glare off the snow is severe.

Meals: Breakfast, Dinner | Overnight: Joshimath

Day 03 JOSHIMATH TO CHOPTA | INTO THE MEADOW COUNTRY

The Drive: South-west about 160 km and six hours via Gopeshwar, dropping and climbing again.

Chopta: A cluster of huts in meadow at around 8,800 ft with no real village attached - it exists as the road head for Tungnath and little else.

Evening: Free. There is almost no light pollution here and the night sky is the best of the trip.

  • Top Places to Cover: Gopeshwar, Chopta meadow, Duggalbitta.
  • Importance of Each Place: Chopta is called the Mini Switzerland of Uttarakhand and sits inside the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary, which is why development has been kept minimal.
  • Things to Know: Accommodation at Chopta is basic - huts and camps rather than hotels. Power is limited and there is no reliable network.

Meals: Breakfast, Dinner | Overnight: Chopta

Day 04 TUNGNATH & CHANDRASHILA | THE HIGHEST SHIVA TEMPLE ON EARTH

The Climb: Start early. Tungnath is 3.5 km up a paved but steep path, gaining about 3,000 ft to 12,073 ft. It is the highest Shiva temple in the world and the tallest of the Panch Kedar.

Chandrashila: Another 1.5 km and roughly 1,000 ft above the temple, opening a full arc from Nanda Devi round to Chaukhamba and Kedar dome.

Deoria Tal: On the descent, the trailhead at Sari for Deoria Tal - a lake that reflects Chaukhamba on a still morning, 2.5 km from the road.

  • Top Places to Cover: Tungnath temple, Chandrashila summit, Deoria Tal, Sari village.
  • Importance of Each Place: The Panch Kedar are five temples where Shiva is said to have appeared as parts of a bull; Tungnath is where the arms are worshipped. The temple is believed to be over a thousand years old.
  • Things to Know: The paved path ices over between December and March and is genuinely slippery. Tungnath closes for winter around Diwali and the deity moves to Mukku Math, though the walk remains open.

Meals: Breakfast, Dinner | Overnight: Chopta

Day 05 RETURN TO RISHIKESH | DESCENT THROUGH GARHWAL

The Drive Back: Roughly 200 km and seven to eight hours back down the valley. The trip ends at Rishikesh or Haridwar.

  • Top Places to Cover: Rudraprayag, Devprayag, Rishikesh.
  • Things to Know: Book onward travel from Rishikesh for the following morning rather than the same night.

Meals: Breakfast | Overnight: Journey ends
