Meghalaya rewards people willing to walk. This Meghalaya tour package covers the Sohra waterfall belt, the living root bridges the Khasi have been growing for generations, and the Umngot at Dawki where the water runs clear enough to see the riverbed beneath the boat.

Six days, a shared vehicle, a trip captain throughout, and one seriously demanding day of steps that most people remember longer than anything else on the trip.

What makes this Meghalaya tour package different

  • A full day for the Double Decker — not a rushed morning, because 3,000 steps down and back deserves the time.
  • Mawphlang Sacred Grove with a Khasi guide — the customary law behind it is the point, and a signboard cannot explain it.
  • Dawki timed for the dry months — the Umngot is only genuinely clear from November to March and we say so.
  • Laitlum included — the best viewpoint in the state and one most itineraries skip.
  • Trip captain throughout — plus local guides where the terrain needs one.

Who this trip suits

Backpackers, groups and reasonably fit travellers. The Nongriat descent is a genuine 3,000-step climb each way and is optional, but the trip is built around it.

A note on seasons

October to April is the reliable window: waterfalls still running from the monsoon, clear skies, and the Umngot at its most transparent between November and March. June to September is peak monsoon – extraordinary to see, but the Nongriat descent becomes dangerous and Dawki loses its clarity entirely.

Tour Plan

Day 01 GUWAHATI TO SHILLONG | UMIAM LAKE & POLICE BAZAAR EVENING

Meeting Point: Meet at Guwahati airport or railway station. The drive to Shillong is around 100 km and takes three to three and a half hours, climbing steadily out of the Assam plain into the Khasi hills.

Umiam Lake: The reservoir just before Shillong, created in the 1960s by damming the Umiam river for the first hydel project in the North East. The viewpoint here is the standard first stop of every Meghalaya trip and it earns it.

Evening: Check in and walk Police Bazaar, the commercial heart of Shillong, for Khasi food and the first proper meal of the trip.

  • Top Places to Cover: Umiam Lake viewpoint, Police Bazaar, Ward Lake, Shillong city centre.
  • Importance of Each Place: Shillong was the capital of undivided Assam until 1972 and was nicknamed the Scotland of the East by the British for its rolling hills and pine.
  • Things to Know: Guwahati to Shillong takes longer than the distance suggests. Book arrival flights before 1 pm so you reach Shillong in daylight.

Meals: Dinner | Overnight: Shillong

Day 02 SHILLONG TO SOHRA | NOHKALIKAI FALLS & MAWSMAI CAVE

Elephant Falls: A three-tier fall on the city edge, named by the British after an elephant-shaped rock that the 1897 earthquake destroyed. The name outlived the rock.

To Sohra: The drive to Sohra, still widely called Cherrapunji, is 55 km and about two hours across open moorland that looks nothing like the rest of India.

Nohkalikai: At roughly 340 m this is the tallest plunge waterfall in India, dropping into a green pool that changes colour through the year. The name comes from the story of Ka Likai, and the local guides tell it properly.

Mawsmai Cave: A short limestone passage you walk through rather than crawl, lit and about 150 m long.

  • Top Places to Cover: Elephant Falls, Nohkalikai Falls, Mawsmai Cave, Seven Sisters Falls, Arwah Cave.
  • Importance of Each Place: Sohra and nearby Mawsynram trade the record for the wettest inhabited place on earth. The moorland here is bare not because it is dry but because centuries of rain have stripped the topsoil.
  • Things to Know: Nohkalikai and Seven Sisters run hardest between June and October and can thin considerably by March. Mawsmai Cave has one narrow section that is a tight squeeze for larger frames.

Meals: Breakfast, Dinner | Overnight: Sohra

Day 03 DOUBLE DECKER ROOT BRIDGE | 3,000 STEPS TO NONGRIAT

The Descent: Drive to Tyrna village and start down. It is roughly 3,000 steps to Nongriat, dropping through dense subtropical forest with two wire suspension bridges on the way.

The Bridges: At the bottom, two root bridges sit stacked one above the other across the stream. The Khasi train the aerial roots of Ficus elastica across the water over decades until they take the weight of a footbridge - a living structure that gets stronger with age rather than rotting like timber.

The Pool: There is a natural pool at the bottom worth swimming in before the climb back.

The Return: Budget five to six hours round trip and expect the return climb to be genuinely hard.

  • Top Places to Cover: Tyrna village, Nongriat, the Double Decker root bridge, Rainbow Falls, the wire bridges.
  • Importance of Each Place: Root bridges are found almost nowhere else on earth and represent a form of engineering measured in generations rather than years. Some are believed to be over 150 years old.
  • Things to Know: This is the hardest day of the trip by a distance. Knees suffer more on the way down than lungs do on the way up. Anyone who would rather skip it can visit the single-decker bridge at Riwai the following day instead.

Meals: Breakfast, Dinner | Overnight: Sohra

Day 04 MAWLYNNONG & DAWKI | CLEANEST VILLAGE AND THE UMNGOT RIVER

Mawlynnong: East towards the Bangladesh border. The village was called the cleanest in Asia by a travel magazine in 2003 and has kept it up through communal cleaning rotas and bamboo dustbins on every path. A bamboo sky walk lifts you above the canopy with the Bangladesh plains laid out beyond.

Riwai Root Bridge: A single-decker living root bridge a few minutes away, and the easy alternative for anyone who skipped Nongriat.

Dawki: The Umngot river at the border. In the dry months the water is clear enough that boats appear to float above their own shadow on the riverbed - which is the photograph everyone comes for.

  • Top Places to Cover: Mawlynnong village, the bamboo sky walk, Riwai root bridge, Dawki, the Umngot river.
  • Importance of Each Place: Dawki is a working border crossing with Bangladesh and the bridge here dates to the British period. The Umngot clarity depends entirely on season - it silts up completely in monsoon.
  • Things to Know: Boats at Dawki are hired per boat, not per person, and rates are set locally. The river is only genuinely clear November to March. Carry ID; this is a border area with checkposts.

Meals: Breakfast, Dinner | Overnight: Shillong

Day 05 MAWPHLANG SACRED GROVE | LAITLUM CANYON VIEWPOINT

Mawphlang: A forest the Khasi have protected under customary law for centuries. Nothing may be removed from it - not a fallen leaf, not a stone. Local guides explain the belief system behind that far better than any signboard, and it is the most interesting hour of the trip for most people.

Laitlum: A grassland ridge falling away into deep valley on three sides, with a single footpath descending to villages that have no road access at all. The name means end of hills.

Evening: Free in Shillong. Don Bosco Museum is worth an hour if the weather closes in.

  • Top Places to Cover: Mawphlang Sacred Grove, Laitlum Canyon, Don Bosco Museum, Shillong Peak.
  • Importance of Each Place: Sacred groves are a genuinely ancient conservation practice and Mawphlang is among the best preserved. Laitlum is the finest viewpoint in Meghalaya and still has almost no infrastructure.
  • Things to Know: Take the local guide at Mawphlang - entry without one is discouraged and you would miss the entire point. Laitlum has no railings and the drop is sheer.

Meals: Breakfast, Dinner | Overnight: Shillong

Day 06 RETURN TO GUWAHATI | TRIP CONCLUDES

The Drive Down: Breakfast, then four hours back down to Guwahati, allowing for a stop.

Onward: The trip ends at Guwahati airport or railway station.

  • Top Places to Cover: Umiam Lake, Guwahati airport.
  • Things to Know: Book departure flights after 3 pm. The Shillong to Guwahati road holds up regularly and there is no alternative route.

Meals: Breakfast | Overnight: Journey ends
