The part of Kullu district that the Manali traffic never reaches. This Jibhi Tirthan valley tour package is wooden villages along a trout stream, a 1,500-year-old tower house, and a pass at 10,800 ft with two good walks leading off it.

Jibhi and Tirthan are deliberately slow. There is no ropeway, no mall road and no queue – the point is the valley itself and the Great Himalayan National Park it runs into.

What makes this Jibhi Tirthan valley tour package different

  • Genuinely offbeat — these valleys see a fraction of Manali footfall.
  • Jalori Pass with both walks — Serolsar Lake and Raghupur Fort, not just the pass viewpoint.
  • Chehni Kothi — a 1,500-year-old tower house most visitors have never heard of.
  • Riverside homestays — rather than concrete hotels.
  • Great Himalayan National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage site on your doorstep.

Who this trip suits

Couples, solo travellers, writers and anyone who wants the Himalaya without the noise. Two short uphill walks, both optional.

A note on seasons

March to June and September to November. Jalori Pass closes under snow from roughly late December to March, which cuts off Serolsar and Raghupur entirely. April and May bring rhododendron along the Serolsar trail. July and August are monsoon and the Banjar road is landslide-prone.

Tour Plan

Day 01 DELHI TO JIBHI | ARRIVAL IN THE BANJAR VALLEY

Getting There: Overnight Volvo to Aut, then the turn off the Manali highway into the Banjar valley - about 40 km of narrow road that most Manali traffic never takes.

Jibhi: A village of wooden slate-roofed houses along a trout stream at roughly 5,200 ft. Check in and spend the afternoon by the water.

  • Top Places to Cover: Aut tunnel, Banjar town, Jibhi village, the Jibhi nala.
  • Things to Know: Aut is where you leave the bus - tell the conductor in advance, it is not a scheduled stop for everyone. There is no ATM in Jibhi; the nearest is at Banjar or Aut.

Meals: Dinner | Overnight: Jibhi

Day 02 JIBHI LOCAL | WATERFALL WALK & CHEHNI KOTHI TOWER

The Waterfall: A fifteen-minute walk through deodar from the village to a small fall with a wooden bridge across it.

Chehni Kothi: A steep 2 km climb from Shringa Rishi temple at Bagi to a tower house that is roughly 1,500 years old. It stood around 45 m before the 1905 Kangra earthquake took the top storeys; what remains is still among the tallest traditional structures in the western Himalaya.

Kathkuni Building: The tower is built in kathkuni style - alternating courses of dry-stacked stone and cedar beams with no mortar, which is what lets these buildings flex in an earthquake instead of shattering.

  • Top Places to Cover: Jibhi waterfall, Chehni Kothi, Shringa Rishi temple, Bagi village.
  • Importance of Each Place: Chehni Kothi is one of the finest surviving kathkuni structures anywhere and predates most of what visitors see in Himachal by a millennium.
  • Things to Know: The climb to Chehni is short but genuinely steep and unshaded in parts. Ask before photographing inside temple courtyards; some deities here do not permit it.

Meals: Breakfast, Dinner | Overnight: Jibhi

Day 03 JALORI PASS | SEROLSAR LAKE & RAGHUPUR FORT RIDGE

The Pass: Drive up to Jalori Pass at 10,800 ft, one of the lower Himalayan passes but a genuine watershed between the Kullu and Shimla sides.

Serolsar Lake: A 5 km walk east along a near-level forest trail through oak, ending at a small lake with the Budhi Nagin temple beside it. Local belief holds the serpent goddess keeps the water clear, and it is true that the surface stays free of fallen leaves.

Raghupur Fort: Three kilometres the other way, a ruined hill fort on an open ridge with the Dhauladhar laid out across the horizon.

  • Top Places to Cover: Jalori Pass, Serolsar Lake, Budhi Nagin temple, Raghupur Fort ruins.
  • Importance of Each Place: Serolsar is one of the easiest high-altitude lake walks in Himachal, gaining almost no height. Raghupur was a Mandi-era fort and the ridge is the best viewpoint in the valley.
  • Things to Know: Jalori closes under snow from roughly late December to March, and both walks are inaccessible when it does. There is one dhaba at the pass and nothing on either trail - carry water.

Meals: Breakfast, Dinner | Overnight: Jibhi

Day 04 TIRTHAN VALLEY | TROUT STREAM & GREAT HIMALAYAN NATIONAL PARK

Across to Tirthan: Roughly 20 km to the Tirthan valley, quieter again and steeper-sided.

The River: The Tirthan is a protected trout stream - angling is catch-and-release and needs a permit. Even without fishing, the riverside walk from Gushaini is the best hour of the day.

The Park: The valley runs up into the Great Himalayan National Park, inscribed by UNESCO in 2014, which protects over 1,100 sq km of habitat including Himalayan brown bear, musk deer and western tragopan. A short walk into the buffer zone is possible on request.

  • Top Places to Cover: Tirthan river, Gushaini, Great Himalayan National Park buffer zone, Chhoie waterfall.
  • Importance of Each Place: GHNP is one of only a handful of UNESCO natural World Heritage sites in India and one of the least visited. The Tirthan is among the few rivers in Himachal with no dam on it.
  • Things to Know: Entry into the GHNP core zone requires a separate permit and a registered guide, arranged in advance. Fishing permits are issued at Larji and are not included.

Meals: Breakfast, Dinner | Overnight: Tirthan

Day 05 DEPARTURE | RETURN VOLVO FROM AUT

Last Morning: An hour by the river, then transfer down to Aut for the overnight Volvo to Delhi.

  • Top Places to Cover: Tirthan riverbank, Aut.
  • Things to Know: The Volvo boards at Aut on the highway, not in the village - allow forty minutes for the transfer down.

Meals: Breakfast | Overnight: Overnight in transit
