The Crossing: Boat across to Bangaram, a teardrop of sand and palm inside its own lagoon with no permanent population.

The Reef: Snorkelling here is the best of the trip - parrotfish, rays and reef sharks in water shallow enough to stand in. Turtles are common in the lagoon.

The Island: Bangaram is the one island in Lakshadweep where alcohol is permitted, which is why the resort here has a different character to the rest.

• Top Places to Cover: Bangaram lagoon, the reef, Thinnakara island, the sandbank.
• Importance of Each Place: Bangaram is uninhabited and undeveloped apart from a single resort, which is why its reef has stayed in better condition than most in the Indian Ocean.
• Things to Know: Reef-safe sunscreen only - conventional sunscreen damages coral and is discouraged. Do not stand on or touch the coral; much of it is live and fragile.

Across to Kadmat: A long thin island with a lagoon on one side and open ocean on the other.

The Dive Centre: Kadmat runs one of the better-organised dive operations in the islands, taking certified divers and complete beginners.

On the Water: Kayaking, glass-bottom boat and windsurfing all operate from the lagoon side, where the water stays flat.

• Top Places to Cover: Kadmat lagoon, the dive centre, the ocean-side beach, Kadmat village.
• Importance of Each Place: Kadmat is about 8 km long and barely 500 m wide, so you can walk from calm lagoon to open ocean surf in a few minutes - a contrast you rarely get anywhere else.
• Things to Know: Diving requires a medical declaration and beginners must complete a pool session first. Certified divers should carry their card.

Last Reef Session: A morning snorkel or a second dive before the crossing.

Back to Agatti: Return by boat in the afternoon.

Walking the Island: Agatti is about 6 km end to end and you will pass most of the village doing it. Sunset from the western shore is the last thing on the itinerary and the best.

• Top Places to Cover: Kadmat reef, Agatti village, the western shore, the boat jetty.
• Importance of Each Place: The islanders are almost entirely Muslim and speak Jeseri, a dialect of Malayalam. Fishing and coir remain the main occupations outside tourism.
• Things to Know: Dress modestly in the villages - this is a conservative community and swimwear is for the resort beach only. Photography of people requires asking first.

Last Morning: Breakfast, then transfer to the airstrip for the flight back to Kochi.
