Meghalaya rewards people willing to walk. This Meghalaya tour package covers the Sohra waterfall belt, the living root bridges the Khasi have been growing for generations, and the Umngot at Dawki where the water runs clear enough to see the riverbed beneath the boat.
Six days, a shared vehicle, a trip captain throughout, and one seriously demanding day of steps that most people remember longer than anything else on the trip.
Backpackers, groups and reasonably fit travellers. The Nongriat descent is a genuine 3,000-step climb each way and is optional, but the trip is built around it.
October to April is the reliable window: waterfalls still running from the monsoon, clear skies, and the Umngot at its most transparent between November and March. June to September is peak monsoon – extraordinary to see, but the Nongriat descent becomes dangerous and Dawki loses its clarity entirely.
Meeting Point: Meet at Guwahati airport or railway station. The drive to Shillong is around 100 km and takes three to three and a half hours, climbing steadily out of the Assam plain into the Khasi hills.
Umiam Lake: The reservoir just before Shillong, created in the 1960s by damming the Umiam river for the first hydel project in the North East. The viewpoint here is the standard first stop of every Meghalaya trip and it earns it.
Evening: Check in and walk Police Bazaar, the commercial heart of Shillong, for Khasi food and the first proper meal of the trip.
Meals: Dinner | Overnight: Shillong
Elephant Falls: A three-tier fall on the city edge, named by the British after an elephant-shaped rock that the 1897 earthquake destroyed. The name outlived the rock.
To Sohra: The drive to Sohra, still widely called Cherrapunji, is 55 km and about two hours across open moorland that looks nothing like the rest of India.
Nohkalikai: At roughly 340 m this is the tallest plunge waterfall in India, dropping into a green pool that changes colour through the year. The name comes from the story of Ka Likai, and the local guides tell it properly.
Mawsmai Cave: A short limestone passage you walk through rather than crawl, lit and about 150 m long.
Meals: Breakfast, Dinner | Overnight: Sohra
The Descent: Drive to Tyrna village and start down. It is roughly 3,000 steps to Nongriat, dropping through dense subtropical forest with two wire suspension bridges on the way.
The Bridges: At the bottom, two root bridges sit stacked one above the other across the stream. The Khasi train the aerial roots of Ficus elastica across the water over decades until they take the weight of a footbridge - a living structure that gets stronger with age rather than rotting like timber.
The Pool: There is a natural pool at the bottom worth swimming in before the climb back.
The Return: Budget five to six hours round trip and expect the return climb to be genuinely hard.
Meals: Breakfast, Dinner | Overnight: Sohra
Mawlynnong: East towards the Bangladesh border. The village was called the cleanest in Asia by a travel magazine in 2003 and has kept it up through communal cleaning rotas and bamboo dustbins on every path. A bamboo sky walk lifts you above the canopy with the Bangladesh plains laid out beyond.
Riwai Root Bridge: A single-decker living root bridge a few minutes away, and the easy alternative for anyone who skipped Nongriat.
Dawki: The Umngot river at the border. In the dry months the water is clear enough that boats appear to float above their own shadow on the riverbed - which is the photograph everyone comes for.
Meals: Breakfast, Dinner | Overnight: Shillong
Mawphlang: A forest the Khasi have protected under customary law for centuries. Nothing may be removed from it - not a fallen leaf, not a stone. Local guides explain the belief system behind that far better than any signboard, and it is the most interesting hour of the trip for most people.
Laitlum: A grassland ridge falling away into deep valley on three sides, with a single footpath descending to villages that have no road access at all. The name means end of hills.
Evening: Free in Shillong. Don Bosco Museum is worth an hour if the weather closes in.
Meals: Breakfast, Dinner | Overnight: Shillong
The Drive Down: Breakfast, then four hours back down to Guwahati, allowing for a stop.
Onward: The trip ends at Guwahati airport or railway station.
Meals: Breakfast | Overnight: Journey ends
